Our next Blessing Bag drive is scheduled for October 24,2024 at our monthly Afternoon Connection get together. We plan to assemble 50 bags and will need the following items to share.

Distribution Begins! Blessing "Mana" Bags

The Bags Have Been Blessed! More Bags to Be Made!

Thanks to the hard work and generosity of everyone we have 50 Blessing/Manna bags ready to distribute. Each bag includes water, Vienna sausage, applesauce, granola bar, pudding, plastic utensil packet, razor, shave cream, soap, wash cloth, shampoo, Emory board, comb, facial tissue, band aids, a pair of socks, tooth brush, tooth paste, floss, two (2) resealable plastic bags and a hand-written note. There were also some items provided that, while there wasn’t enough for each bag, were dispersed randomly and much appreciated. Nickie, thank you for allowing us to help your dream become a reality.

In addition, our sweet David had a wonderful idea and made 5 little treat bags for the Fur Babies. I would also like to give extra kudos to him because he doesn’t have a sewing machine so all of the bags he makes are completely sewn by hand. All our fellow seamstresses out there know what I’m talking’ about. I don’t have a machine and made one (1) by hand promptly saying Nope, Nope! and hi-jacked a sewing machine (Thank you Barb.) His contribution was/is a true labor of love!

Finally, I would like to extend a special thank you to those that helped with the hand written notes. They added a personal touch that might prove to be the most meaningful part of this ministry.

Time to Thrive with Mission: Deep Sea!

A Summer Program for Kidz

All kidz 3-12 of age are invited to join us for our second annual Time to Thrive program! This year our theme is Mission: Deep Sea where your kiddo will be a SEA agent in training. Our crew will travel deep below the surface, experience the wonders of creation, face a few challenges, and discover that knowing our Creator doesn’t require a special badge or a submarine. Our faith grows deeper when we spend time with God, spend time with others, use our gifts to serve, and share our stories of faith.

Friday July 19th: 7pm-8:30pm
Saturday July 20th: 9am-4pm
Sunday July 21st: 10am-12pm

Gather with other MCC members and denominational staff for a time of unity and inspiration at our Network Gathering, themed "Together We Rise: shaping the church for the future." This inclusive event invites everyone—whether you’re a clergy member, a participant in our LEAD program, or simply passionate about community—to deepen connections and explore meaningful discussions.

Experience dynamic workshops on social justice, leadership, and community engagement. Engage in reflective sessions designed to inspire action and foster unity within our church community.

Highlights include opportunities for clergy to earn CEU credits, insightful discussions on shaping our church’s future direction, and a moving communion service and concert celebrating our shared purpose.

With QCD you can donate up to $105,000 directly from an IRA to a charity without getting taxed on the distribution (win for you, and a win for the charity).

Benefit Concert for Justin and Scott Ryan

MCC Musician, Justin Ryan's husband Scott, is undergoing cancer treatment. Justin publishes the weekly Southern Gospel Sissy

Recently, Justin has been unable to do concerts at all as his husband, Scott, battles an aggressive cancer that has invaded his colon, bladder and prostate. Scott will be having surgery in June that will hopefully remove the remaining cancerous cells, but it will leave him with two ostomies to live with going forward. Justin has found work in a local medical office, but he will have to take a month off without pay (on FMLA) to care for Scott and Scott will need at least 6 months off on unpaid FMLA.

BALM Ministries, Church of the Trinity and SunCoast MCC will be working on fundraisers to help them through this time, including a benefit concert. Easter Sunday Reflection 2023

Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston

The MCC theme for Lent and Easter this year is “Vulnerable Together”.

Who do we think of as vulnerable?

· Babies and small children

· Those who are ill or struggling to cope with life

· Those who are caught up in natural disasters or wars

Who are less vulnerable?

· The wealthy

· Those in positions of power

· Those with great physical or emotional strength

· Those who, in whatever society we live, have the most privilege, whether based on gender identity, race, sexuality, age, ability, social status and so on

The message of Easter reminds us that we are all vulnerable together.

As humans, we are vulnerable together in our Good Friday moments and experiences.

Fear comes to us all – fear of being alone, fear of failure, fear of the future, fear of the past, fearing of losing what we have

Death comes to us all, even to Jesus.

Grief and loss come to us all.

Money, power and position, all the advances in technology and medicine still cannot mend a broken heart.

Hope comes, change comes, resurrection comes when we recognise that we are vulnerable together, that we are responsible for each other.

It is rare for us, as individuals, to achieve a goal, make a difference in the world or experience some kind of resurrection in our own lives, totally on our own. There is often a supportive and encouraging person who believes in us – a teacher, parent, spouse. There may be a community that gathers around us, because they know and love us. Or it may be 1000s of strangers who march together to say “Enough is enough”, because of something that happened in one person’s life.

Jesus chose disciples and gathered followers to work together to share the good news. They were together to receive the news of Christ’s resurrection from Mary and the other women. They had shared their fears, their doubts, their grief and now they shared their joy.

This Easter, let us be vulnerable together in our hopes and fears. Let us listen to each other, learn from each other and strive together to bring justice, hope and peace for all. Let us be part of the resurrection together. Amen

A Holy Saturday Reflection for 2023

A vigil among other things is a time of keeping awake, being attentive and present. It holds anticipation, perhaps, and is often in waiting for a holiday or observance; and it need not anticipate. Perhaps this vigil is most powerful not waiting, not knowing, merely being, so that we do not skip too quickly or too shallowly to victory. So that we truly rest in and collect ourselves together in a time of not knowing, unsure and in need. So that we are fully present with this time of sabbath, silence, and sorrow.

This day was then and is now a deeply and uniquely Jewish day of rest that calls its people to zakar, to remember, and to qadash, to set it apart. It is remarkable that the Mark gospel remains silent about this sabbath, so much more so after detailing each other day of the week, so much more after detailing the previous day in 3-hour increments. This silence is echoed in the Nicene Creed which, unlike the Apostles Creed, does not name the harrowing, skips from Friday to Sunday, and brings to my mind the number of times throughout gospel accounts of Jesus that he and his followers retreated, went away, withdrew – to a certain place, in a house, beside the lake, to a mountainside, to a quiet place.

This day, unforgettably, inexorably, is filled with sorrow, reflected in our lectionary selections from Job 14 or Lamentations 3. This is perhaps what we are uniquely called to be present with today, to rest into in community and history. More perhaps than a single day of an annual season, perhaps today calls us to remember and connect, to rest into and be present with our grief and trauma as it comes unpredictably, repeatedly, even now from prejudice and oppression by design as well as from the cycles of our daily, lived experiences of loss.

We need not vigil alone. In the gospels stories, Jesus often did not retreat alone. A well-known Buddhist parable tells that, after losing her only child, Kisa Gotami became desperate and asked if anyone could help her. her sorrow was so great that many thought she had lost her mind. an old man told her to see the buddha. the buddha told her that he could bring the child back to life if she could find white mustard seeds from a family where no one had died. she desperately went from house to house, but to her disappointment, she could not find a house that had not suffered the death of a family member. Finally the realization struck her that there is no house free from mortality.

Buddhist author and teacher Sharon Salzberg instructs that what Gotami came to see what that she was not alone in her suffering. By realizing that all share experiences of loss and death, Kisa Gautami joined the whole again; she became part of something rather than feeling separate from it, and this freed her heart to have compassion for herself and compassion for all beings. Pema Chodron calls this “Things falling apart” and notes that it is ongoing, “a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

I hope there is something here that resonates for you, for your family or community, in our and your grief and loss. Surviving violence. On this day and every day, the Council of Elders offers you breath and balance. Peace.

A Maundy Thursday Reflection for 2023

Rev. Elder Maxwell Reay

Hello, I am Rev. Elder Maxwell Reay and I bring you greetings from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Brené Brown says, “Vulnerability is the willingness to show up and share your authentic self while knowing that you have no control over the outcome of your interactions.”

This day we mark Maundy Thursday – observed in different ways around the Globe depending on your church’s traditions.

But for the most part this celebration will involve the sharing of food or a meal.

This day marks the end of the 40 day period of Lent which started on Ash Wednesday.

The word Maundy comes from a Latin word that means command.

This is because it refers to the instructions Jesus gave his disciples at the Last Supper.

It was also the time that Jesus gave the disciples a new commandment.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you” (John 13:34)

Still today such a powerful and radical instruction - as it was when it was said all that time ago.

I want to go back however to the instruction or command that Jesus gave his disciples prior to them all gathering in the upper room for the meal that we all recognise and know as the Last Supper.

Jesus said “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” (Mark 14:13-15)

Jerusalem would have been very busy and crowd with people gathering for the Passover. A man carrying water would have been very visible and obvious as it was the tradition at that time for women to carry water.

So even before getting to the upper room Jesus choose to break from the norm. Jesus chose a gender non-conforming individual, a queer individual, a trans sibling to show the disciples the way.

The way which led to the meal that has been shared in Christian communities for centuries. The meal we share today.

This is a meal of liberation and freedom.

A meal of love and compassion.

A meal that we can come to just as we are with all our vulnerabilities – our true authentic selves, knowing that we need not leave anything outside the door of the upper room.

We are all welcome at this table. This is an open table. We just have to be willing to show up.

“This is my body which is broken open for you. Eat and remember me.”

“This is my life poured out for you. Drink and remember me.”

A Good Friday Reflection for 2023

Arms Wide Open - the welcome of God; the love of God

John 3:16 NIV

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Have you ever felt the need to open your arms wide open, when standing next to the ocean, or when standing in a vortex (swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation and self-exploration) up in the mountains of Sedona, or even when you go to hug your family or friends? Isn’t that what we do? Why do we do it?

I believe that we do it to experience joy, love, delight; To take in the expansiveness of God’s creation, To soak it all in as savory as we can, to breathe it in even deeper still, even if just for a moment.

This Good Friday, at the foot of the cross we begin by imagining Jesus on the cross. His arms are opened wide towards us and our world. Try not to focus on the pain, the humiliation, the anguish he suffered but try to focus on the love that he represents, the love that refuses to keep distance from us no matter what.

To imagine love in this place of such dreadful suffering is not easy. The focus is more often placed on judgement, guilt, punishment; they are all part of this story.

The cross is a place of painful truths but that is not where the story starts. What is original is divine love. “For God so loved the world, that God gave God’s begotten son.”

When we begin with the negatives, focused on the problem, we never get out of the cycles of judgment and condemnation. No repentance is ever enough. No effort will make us acceptable.

It may be true that human shortcomings have made God’s embrace of us a work of redemption ... but it is love that holds God there. Love is reaching out to us no matter the cost.

God does not love us because we are good; God loves us because God is good. This is welcome news in any language.

The cross tells us that nothing we can do will ever separate us from God's eternal eagerness to love us. Divine love is made visible here - forever. So let us draw near to this love and accept the offered embrace unlike anything we have ever known. May we always choose love.

Prayer

O God, love that is revealed upon the cross through the open arms of Jesus. Your love is endless and Your reach boundless. Your embrace knows no separation. In wonder and gratitude, we turn to you and open our arms to receive your love and we thank you for loving us. A’ho, A’she, and Amen!

A Palm Sunday Reflection for 2023

Theme: Vulnerable Together

Scripture Focus: Psalm 118:25-29 And Matthew 21:5-11

My name is Rev. Elder Carolyn Mobley-Bowie and I live in Saginaw, Michigan, USA but I bring you Greetings from the entire Council of Elders and our Moderator, the Rev. Elder Cecilia Eggleston. I hope that you will hear my Reflections today as a prayer and a call to prayer.

Why are so many of us afraid of the word “vulnerable” or of the idea of “vulnerability”? We are actually afraid to experience what the word means, or what we think it means. So what is the meaning of vulnerable? The dictionary meaning or definition says: “capable of being physically or emotionally wounded” - - “open to attack or danger” - - “assailable” – the Latin root word means “to wound.”

These definitions make many people believe that being vulnerable is being in a position where other people can hurt you—often through physical or verbal attacks. It is seen as a position of weakness. This kind of thinking would lead anyone to believe that being vulnerable is a really bad thing – a thing to be avoided at all costs.

However, if we stop and think it through on a deeper level, we might begin to see and think about vulnerability in a very different way. Instead of seeing it as a sigh of weakness, we might begin to understand it as a very real strength. In truth, it takes genuine courage to be vulnerable.

We become more resilient and even more brave when we allow ourselves to embrace who we truly are and how we really feel and then choose to share our truth with others. We can readily see how this works for us as individuals, but it also works for us in groups. Thus, our theme: Vulnerable Together.

In our Gospel story of that first Palm Sunday, we can see how Jesus’ decision to embrace his full identity and to share his truth with others opened him up to receive both acceptance and rejection; praise and accusation; by some in the crowd. He became vulnerable to the shouts of “Hosanna” and the jeers of “crucify” from the same crowd.

By believing in Jesus, his followers also became liable to the crowd’s praise and persecution. Jesus and his disciples (and the larger group of followers) were “Vulnerable Together.” Standing with Jesus, marching into Jerusalem with Him increased their boldness; it made them strong enough to continue speaking up for Him long after He was gone.

Our history as Metropolitan Community Churches – as out and proud believers and followers of Christ – is a modern lesson in vulnerability. Our faith in Christ has made us strong together. Proclaiming the truth our Creator’s all inclusive love and acceptance, has put us on the front line of attacks from some parts of the church and the world. Yet we have stood together, thus giving many others the courage to “come out” of life-destroying closets and begin to walk boldly in the light of Divine Love.

As we continue to embrace our vulnerability, we are growing in resilience and faith, knowing that we are never alone—we have each other and our Loving Savior, leading the procession in our Pride Parades and our Palm Sunday celebrations all around the world. May we always remember the words to the closing song used at our recent Prayer Vigils for Social Justice – “We are walking in the Light of God,” as we stay Vulnerable Together.

A Call to Courage

Keep alert, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love . (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

Greetings Metropolitan Community Churches and welcome to a journey together through the Lenten Season. There is a call to courage during this season:

• The courage to face death and embrace life

• The courage to invest time and energy on things of the Spirit

• The courage to seek deeper relationships with God and God’s people

• The courage to be sacrificial

The courage to face death and embrace life : Lent is a journey with Jesus to the cross and also to the resurrection. At some point we will all courageously face Golgotha (Matthew 27:33), a place of death and destruction. Equally courageously, we will all encounter eternal life, “for if we have been united with Christ in death, we will certainly also be united with Christ in a resurrection” (Roman 6:5).

The courage to invest time and energy on things of the Spirit : There are so many distractions and so many things demanding our attention but in Lent we are invited to pause and reflect on where we are making investments of time and energy. We may experience the Spirit nudging us to spend more time in prayer or praise and less time in worry or finding fault. May the hearts of MCC’ers be brave in seeking out fresh winds of the Spirit.

The courage to seek deeper relationships with God and God’s people : It does not require much of us to travel in the shallows with one another, exchange occasional pleasantries and avoid authenticity in favor of cheap peace. Likewise, we can keep things on the surface with God, sing a few hymns once a week and consider ourselves in good with the Divine. It is audacious to desire connections of greater depth with God and God’s people. May we be gutsy in developing stronger bonds with one another.

The courage to be sacrificial : “Sacrifice” is a loaded word but I think it is time to reclaim it.

Certainly we have to be careful when using the term and many people in oppressed groups have had the experience of being called on to sacrifice while no sacrifice has come from those holding power. And yet sacrifice is at the core of the call of Jesus, who says, “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” There is nothing more thrilling than surrendering control of one’s life to the glory of God. Many MCC’ers have experienced this joy that comes with entrusting our lives to God’s care. We do it for a moment and another moment and another and those sacrificial moments build on one another and we come to understand that it is all about love.

I became a part of MCC Churches because of the love I witnessed for all of God’s people. Let’s continue to pour out that love this Lenten season and beyond.

A Reflection from MCC - Black History Month

As we enter and travel through the month of February as a global body, we celebrate love and desire with Valentine's Day, celebrate the minor lunar calendar festivals waking the dragon who brings rain, we attend to and hold ourselves accountable to Black History in the U.S. and to LGBTQ History in the U.K., and we celebrate and prepare with the Shrovetide-related festivals of Dia del Amory y la Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship), Dia del Carino (Day of Affection), and the Carnaval do Brasil (Carnival of Brazil). It is no wonder that one of the legends of the martyr Valentine is that he performed weddings for soldiers forbidden to marry. Our journeys through this month for many of us are knotted with and rooted in our many various distinct and overlapping people's experiences of marginalization, tenacity, and change-making.

As we journey toward freedom, may we remember with gratitude those who paved the trail before us. The ones who traversed this path with dignity, tenacity, and grace, showing us through their travels, the value and necessity of dichotomy; in is out, endings are beginnings, night is day, depending on where we’re living.

Whether in motion or in stillness, by whatever means we get there, may we be blessed with companions who will accompany us, however stony the road. We do not travel alone. We are not lost.

When we reach middle ground, may we be met with compassion for how we’ve roamed.

May we have new insight into our wholeness, realizing that this journey, full of twists and turns, ultimately brings us to ourselves, which encourages others along the way.

Advent Reflections - Day After Christmas

Hello Saints,

This message is for Tuesday, 27th December considered to be the 3rd day of Christmas.

Christians believe that the 12 days of Christmas mark the amount of time it took after the birth of Jesus for the magi to travel to Bethlehem for the Epiphany.

Indigenous people believe that feathers are also messages from the spiritual realm.

They also believed that the hollow tube that makes up the center of a feather was a way to not only receive but also send messages and prayers to Great Spirit.

Many sacred Indigenous ceremonies use feathers to heal, bring balance, and cleanse places and people.

Peacock feathers are a spiritual symbol of leadership, peace, and regeneration.

Chicken feathers indicate that you may need to keep pecking to see what is below the surface.

Owl feathers symbolize wisdom, and the ability to see things normally, even in the dark.

Turkey feathers symbolize abundance, pride and fertility

Sometimes the appearance of a feather is just a reminder that you are not alone. That you are supported on your spiritual, emotional, and physical journey.

When you come across a feather, take the time to understand its message for you. You never know, it could be just the answer you need right now.

Remember, the universe doesn’t make mistakes and every message reaches us just when we need it the most. May it be so! A’ho!

Christmas Day - Messengers of Good News!

But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah,[ a ] the Lord.

Sometimes in my prayers, I pray for those waiting for news.

Many of us know what it is like to wait for news that could be difficult or hard to bear.

Receiving good news also has an impact. We don’t think so much about that.

We get the good news that we have our dream job.

We are delighted, and it also means some changes – perhaps learning to work with a new team or even move location.

We get the good news that the treatment worked, and we are going to be just fine.

We make a commitment to ourselves

to change our eating habits, exercise more,

be more mindful of the blessings we experience in each day.

Imagine the impact of the this good news on Mary and Joseph, on the shepherds, perhaps on the innkeeper or others who witnessed the events of the birth of the Christ child. The messengers of Good News, the angels proclaiming that the Messiah has been born.

For Mary and Joseph, at the very least, they are now parents, responsible for protecting and shaping this new life. The ministry of Jesus only began after years of their love and care.

Perhaps some of the shepherds started to think differently about their own faith, or their own status in society. After all, they were the first ones to hear and then share the good news of the Messiah’s birth.

So what is our response to this good news?

Just as we are often delighted to share other good news we receive, we are called to be the messengers of this good news.

That we are blessed to know that Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us.

That we are blessed to be called children of God.

That we are blessed with the good news of God’s unconditional love for each one of us.

We know this, because from Mary, Joseph and the shepherds, down through the ages, other people have been impacted by this good news and have been faithful messengers to pass it on.

Now it is over to us, to me and to you.

So may you feel blessed by the good News this Christmas and pass it on.

Advent Reflections - Christmas Eve

Goudy here and I bring you greetings from Metropolitan Community Church of the Lehigh Valley in Bethlehem, PA, USA where I have the honor of serving as pastor and I also have the honor of serving Metropolitan Community Churches as Elder.

Prayers for all God’s people to experience a glorious Christmas Eve.

There is the beautiful song that many churches sing on this night and it is titled: "O Holy Night:”

O holy night,

The stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

What does it mean to be holy?

To be holy is to be set apart for God

To be holy is not to consider oneself better than anyone, that’s being “holier than thou.”

Again, to be holy is to be set apart for God, to separate oneself out from ordinary awareness and to enter into spiritual awareness.

I will never forget one of the sermons of the founder of Metropolitan Community Churches.

Rev. Troy Perry was preaching about God’s love for LGBT people and I was still pretty new to MCC, so it was probably sometime in the late 1990s.

During his sermon, Rev. Perry shared a piece of scripture from chapter 2 of the First Letter of Peter:

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of One who called you out of the shadows into God’s marvelous light.

Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people.”

That day, without a doubt, it was confirmed to me through Rev. Perry’s sermon that LGBT people were holy, that MCC was holy, that we were a people called to proclaim God’s mighty acts. While we may not have been a people, we were now God’s people and we were expected to share God’s mercy and grace and justice and goodness and love.

This night is unlike any other night on the 364 other days of the year. It is holy and set apart. On this holy night, the Prince of Peace and Wonderful Counselor has broken through to our broken world, giving us renewal and hope. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we are not the same.

Through the Savior of the world God has called us, is calling us and will continue to call to MCC in the decades and centuries to come.

God says: you are my chosen ones, you are my people, you are holy and we are astonished and yet we say “Amen” and trust that it is so.

Advent Reflections - Joy

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies my God, and my spirit rejoices in you, God my Savior, for you have looked with favor on the lowliness of your servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is your name. Your mercy is for those who fear you from generation to generation. You have shown strength with your arm; you have scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. You have brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; you have filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. You have helped your servant Israel, in remembrance of your mercy, according to the promise you made to our ancestors, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”

Joy is an abiding happiness that doesn't rely on whether things are going well or going terribly. Joy is like the pilot light in the stove. It is always on, even when the stove is cold, but when it is time to roast turnips or bake the buckle, what the pilot light does not only warms the oven, it warms the kitchen. It not only warms the kitchen, it warms the whole house. Joy is dying embers banked in the stove over a cold night, and it’s their next-day fire kindled and crackling. It's the evergreen and the holly and the wintergreen berries buried in snow that the farm children dug up on the south slope. It is enduring. It is nourishing.

Joy is Hope. Joy keeps hope company in the dark and the cold. (And hope spoon-feeds joy from a small tin bowl.) Joy is peace. Joy fuels peace, it is both what makes us want to do peace in the first place, and it is our reward:

I slept and dreamt that life was joy.

I awoke and saw that life was service.

I acted and behold, service was joy. (Rabindranath Tagore)

Mary is a poor, homeless woman-child. She is both sexually suspect and exploited sexual survivor. She is nothing, has nothing in her world, no one. But Mary knows joy that is a steadfast presence with her – a presence defined by compassion, correction, rightness, rebalance. Mary's joy transforms and animates her, if not her circumstances, and then also her circumstances. A poor, homeless, sexually suspect exploited survivor woman-child delights in life for herself and with expectation of change for the world. She is distributive justice’s target audience. She is us: delivered by river and rain from our deserts, and called to action – called to carry goodness or goodness into the world through our own bodies. So that truly and fully, our joy is transposed as love, and as blessing.

The poet Jan Richardson says, You who are yourselves a blessing who know that to feed the hungering is to bless and to give drink to those who thirst is to bless. who know the blessing in welcoming the stranger and giving clothes to those who have none. who know to care for the sick is blessing and blessing to visit the prisoner: may the blessing you have offered now turn itself toward you to welcome and to embrace you at the feast of the blessed. Advent Reflections - Peace

Hello, and thank you for tuning in to this Advent message! My name is Karl Hand, I am an Elder with Metropolitan Community Churches, and I wanted to share with you something about Messengers of Peace today. In the gospel of John, many of us know that Jesus said

“Peace I leave with you, not as the world gives, but as I give” – John 14:17.

There are two different kinds of peace that Jesus mentions. And at the moment we are living at a time when, once again, as so often throughout history, there is a threat of war in the world on a very grand scale. And we don’t want to give in to a version of peace that isn’t everything it’s cut out to be.

A few years before Jesus was born, Caesar Augustus had an inscription carved in every capital city throughout the eastern Empire. And this inscription proclaimed that:

· Augustus was a saviour.

· His birthday was the birthday of God.

· The peace that had been brought by the Roman Empire was Good News for the whole world.

And in many of the Advent readings that we have throughout this season, we hear angels coming and announcing words about Good News, about a Saviour being born, about the birthday of a God, and proclaiming great joy. It sounds very much like that inscription.

It’s only a few years difference between those inscriptions that Caesar asked to be carved into the monuments in cities around the word, and the time that Jesus’ birth was announced. But there are a few differences between the peace that comes through an empire, and the peace that comes through Jesus Christ.

One of the saviours is,

· At the top of the Roman aristocracy.

· The top of the Patriarchy in the world

· Has taken power through force, through an army.

· Is consolidating that power by making a list of who is where — we even see this in the Gospel story itself! — around the world, so that he can more efficiently tax them.

But the saviour that we remember at Christmas is one who,

· Was born, not at the top of the aristocracy, but at the very bottom of the peasant system, of the peasant class.

· He lived in a backwater called Judaea

· He slept in an animal’s food trough

· HJis only servants he was attended by, were those who came voluntarily: shepherds and sages who came to worship him.

· He didn’t have an army, except for an army of angels.

And I believe that the Christmas story gives us two different versions of peace. Jesus would later say,

“My peace I leave to you, not as the world gives,”

I think he meant, not as the Roman Empire would give. And not as empire offers us as we seek to be people of peace. This Advent season as we reflect on the stories of Christmas and we hope to be people who model the peace that Jesus offers, I think we’re given a choice about what kind of peace we will seek in the world, a peace that comes through control and through empire, or the peace that Jesus brings into the world when he says,

“My peace I give you.”

God, I pray for our church community. I pray for our world. In 2022 as we approach 2023, God let there be peace in the earth. Let it not be a peace of control or manipulation, or violence, but a peace that comes through Your Love, and through your Son Jesus. Amen.

Advent Reflections - Hope

I am Rev. Elder Troy Treash bringing you greetings from my home in Houston, Texas in the United State on behalf of the Elders Council to wish you a meaningful Advent and a Merry Christmas this Season. This is the first of some devotions to prepare us for Christmas to prepare us for Christmas with a theme of Messengers – messengers of hope, messengers of peace, messengers of joy, and messengers of love. Where we will focus on the angelic messengers that intrude into the world as we know it as we head toward Christmas.

The world as they knew it was a place of occupation, a place of Roman Empire, a place where they had made their bargains with what was going on so that they could still worship, they could still go to the Temple. But they were not a free people in that time and that place God intervenes through these messengers and in Jesus to change the world to become incarnate, to free us and bring us salvation.

What happens in this particular story, the angel Gabriel finds Zechariah at his once in a lifetime opportunity. He has won the lottery for the priests and is able to go into the Holy of Holies to make an offering. This is something you might get to do once in a lifetime and it is his turn. He might be a little apprehensive. He knows that people, some of them at least, have judged him and his wife Elizabeth and him for being a barren couple. Without children somehow God must be judging him. And people aren’t always kind in that regard, so Zechariah wants to take this opportunity no matter what people say about him to be faithful to God. In doing so he meets the angel Gabriel who tells him you are going to have a son, and you and Elizabeth are going to have a boy. His name will be John, and he will bring people back to their faith.

And Zechariah is amazed and says well Elizabeth and I are pretty old. The angel Gabriel says well you are not done yet, and God can use old to help change the world. In so doing Zechariah’s questions create a response from Gabriel so that he is then mute until John is born.

What kind of messenger will you be this Advent Season? What kind of hope will you bring? Will you bring hope to the barren? Hope to the elderly? Will you bring hope to a world under occupation? Will you bring the hope of healing? Will you bring hope? We ask you, “What kind of messenger are you?

Update on Council of Elders Call to Prayer

Update on Frequency of Call to Prayer

The Council of Elders has made a change in the frequency of the Call to Prayer. Until Advent, the Council of Elders will share a monthly, rather than weekly, Call to Prayer. This will provide some relief to our volunteer translators and staff who have been preparing the weekly prayers. In Advent, the Elders will provide a weekly video and written prayer reflection. Thank you to everyone who has submitted a prayer over the last several years and to those who have shared the prayers with their congregations. Thank you also to our volunteer translators in Portuguese, Spanish and German for all of their work, and to MCC staff member, Janine McCarthy, who has prepared the prayers and distributed them.

STATEMENT ON PROTECTION OF JOURNALISTS

The Council of Elders of Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) mourn the loss of Shireen Abu Akleh, a longtime reporter with the Al Jazeera Arabic network who was killed while covering an Israeli army operation in the West Bank town of Jenin on May 11. The organization Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called for an international investigation of Abu Akleh’s death.

Akleh was pre-deceased by Yasser Murtaja (Gaza), Simone Camilli (Italy), Fadel Shaana (Palestine), James Miller (Britain), and more than a dozen others covering the violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Please visit the website below to read the full statement.

The MCC church of Finland has been holding regular prayers for peace since the beginning of the conflict, praying for all those touched by this war. Thank you for your generosity! It is making a difference!

MCCers around the world have responded so quickly, generously, and regularly to the relief efforts for Ukraine. For MCC, this has been with our partner organization in Ukraine – ACCEPT Romania – who are working on the ground and around the clock to assist LGBTQ refugees fleeing their homelands. They are exercising such compassion and flexibility to respond to the unique needs and challenges of each situation. You’ll hear more about that later in this email.

We are also strengthening our relationships with MCC-based organizations who are well ahead of us in meeting the needs of refugees around the world (more details below). This is a time for us to come together in solidarity and support, and we are doing that.

How you can help now

You can still give through MCC to meet these needs. We are so grateful to ACCEPT and their on-the-ground leadership. Florin Buhuceanu, a long-time MCC-affiliated activist, is a founder and supporter of these efforts. And, ACCEPT is keeping MCC up to date as things change and needs shift. 100% of any funds you contribute will go to ACCEPT. MCC is covering every administrative fee, including wire transfers, conversion rates, etc.
